MPD officers offer go door to door to assist neighbors fighting heat

(WMC-TV) - Memphis Police officers went door to door Friday to check on neighbors in the extreme heat.

Action News 5 went along for the ride as officers checked on residents who are living without air conditioners or fans.

Like many senior citizens fighting to stay cool, 85-year-old Mae Willie Davis could not be more appreciative of the new fan she and her son, Eddie Davis, received from officers.

"We're sleeping in the den because the air conditioner in the den is right over my mama's head," said Eddie Davis.  "It's not air back in the bedrooms."

Officers and firefighters continued to check on elderly residents who MLGW has identified as not having current utility service.

"To make sure they're OK," said Lt. Gwendolyn Lawrence with the Memphis Police Department.  "If they have somewhere they can go in this heat, and if not, we're prepared to take them to the cooling centers so they'll be OK."

Officers went door to door, providing much needed relief for those who need it.

"We checked about 30 homes yesterday and we delivered about 19 fans," said Lawrence.  "It got kind of big, so we're going to keep doing this and get fans out to whoever needs them."

Lawrence said they want to make sure residents are taking shelter in air-conditioned buildings and drinking plenty of fluids.

"Drink water, plenty of water," said Lawrence.  "Look out for the neighbors, each other.  Look out for whoever."

"It's so hot you got to have some kind of air," said Eddie Davis.  "And the air you all are doing for us is amazing."
