89-year-old woman killed by stray bullet

(WMC-TV) - An 89-year-old Crockett County woman was shot and killed by a stray bullet inside her home late Thursday night.

The TBI's Violent Crime Response team had yellow crime scene blocking off roads in Maury City, Tennessee as they spent the day Friday gathering evidence at the home of 89-year-old Lila Lilley and her 91-year-old husband, Alymer Lilley.

Just before midnight Thursday night, someone shot through the door of the home.  Lila Lilley was shot and killed.  Her husband heard the shots and called 911.

"Why would anybody want to?" asked neighbor Hazel White.  "She's good as gold.  She'd give you the last dime she had."

White is a neighbor and friend of the Lilleys.  She said the couple has no children and lived alone in the house.  She said they have been in ill health.

A TBI spokesperson said investigators have no idea who would want to shoot Lila Lilley.  They do not believe she was targeted.

The Lilleys live in a rural area mostly surrounded by farm fields.  TBI agents walked through the cotton fields searching for evidence.  They removed items from the house and put them in their mobile crime scene vehicle.

"She's just the finest woman you've ever seen," said White.

Investigators have not released much information.  If you have any information, call the TBI at 1-800-TBI-FIND.
