MLK to be honored during 2-day Mud Island event

(WMC-TV) - On the same day Dr. Martin Luther King is honored with a memorial in Washington, he will be honored at an event in the city where he died.

A cross section of local religious and political leaders gathered Wednesday two announce a two-day event scheduled for Mud Island in Memphis, called "Great Day of the Dreamers."

"We have to," said Arthur Hunt, who is organizing the event. '"This is the place he gave his final, prophetic utterance."

The Reverend Ralph White said the event would be a major tribute.

"Here in Memphis, we understand Dr. King. We understand his dream, and we appreciate what he has done here in Memphis," White said.

According to Hunt, on August 28th, Mid-Southerners will be able to come to Mud Island's amphitheater in Memphis for a giant worship service. It will include a live video feed of the King Memorial dedication in Washington.

White the event's focus will be on King's sacrifices, it will equally focus on King's dreams for the future.  To that end, it will feature a college fair aimed at encouraging young people to seek higher education.

"For our next generation, our youth, to come and get scholarships, and also to know that there is hope in the dreams," organizer Kelly Johnson said.

"We want to wake up the dreamer in all of our children, and wake up the children in the adults as well, to see that there is a brighter day coming," Irene Booker added.

The festivities will begin Saturday August 27th with documentaries honoring Dr. King.
