Memphis church provides thousands of new shoes for children

(WMC-TV) - Members of one Memphis church are reaching out to help Memphis kids get their school year started in a very special way.

For nearly twenty years, members of St. Andrew's AME Church have been helping Memphis school kids get a firm footing on their school year.

"We have, today, over 1,200 pairs of shoes contributed by our members," said church pastor Rev. Kenneth Robinson.

Beginning early Saturday morning, hundreds of parents and kids gathered at the church for its annual back-to-school shoe giveaway.

"We are getting children, just like in a shoe store, getting their feet sized, they're coming in and getting brand new shoes, the boys and girls are getting haircuts, school supplies," said Robinson.  "It's just a great back-to-school event."

Nineteen years ago, a local teacher organized the event after noticing an increase in school absences because students did not have good shoes.

"It's about understanding people are struggling, people are hurting and our feeling is that children shouldn't have to be a victim of this economy," added co-pastor Rev. Marilynn Robinson.

In addition to brand new shoes, kids were also able to get free haircuts and school supplies at this annual event.

For members of the 1,700 member church, this shoe giveaway is much more than meeting a need.

"We will continue to serve over the next few weeks, fourteen to fifteen hundred children because more shoes are coming in through donations," Robinson said.
