Missouri man charged with murder of missing girl

(WMC-TV) - Police arrested 43-year-old Shawn Morgan of Senath, Missouri Saturday and charged him with murdering missing three-year-old Breeann Rodriguez.

Morgan lived down the street from Rodriguez's family.  She was last seen riding her bicycle with training wheels near her home one week ago.

Investigators said Morgan suffocated Rodriguez the day she disappeared.

Prosecuting attorney Steve Sokoloff would not say why Morgan allegedly suffocated her, or if he confessed.

Sokoloff would also not say if they have enough evidence to indicate Rodriguez is indeed dead.

"We are still conducting a search for Breeann's body, it has not been recovered," said Sokoloff.  "It is entirely inappropriate for me to talk about the details or evidentiary matters in this case."

After getting the disheartening news that investigators believed Rodriguez was dead, volunteers headed out again Saturday to search for her body.

Dive teams searched floodway areas near Senath Saturday.

"You just don't think about it happening in your home town, especially not a small town like Senath," said resident Bud Brooks.

Family members said they held out hope all week that their daughter would be found alive.  Saturday they only wanted to say that they were thankful for people's prayers.

In addition to first degree murder, Morgan is also charged with armed criminal action and tampering with physical evidence.  He is being held without bond.
