(WMC-TV) – A suspect was shot Tuesday afternoon while trying to escape from a Shelby County sheriff's deputy.

The incident happened around 3:30 p.m. Monday in the area of Whisper Valley and Hickory Hill.

According to investigators, the incident happened as deputies were attempting to serve a warrant on Daetrus Pilate as he picked up his child from school. As the deputies approached Pilate, he spotted them and took off, leading them on a brief pursuit.

After a few moments, investigators said, Pilate motioned to deputies that he was going to stop. He pulled over, but when a deputy moved in, Pilate put the car in reverse and struck him.

In response, the deputy, Toby Shaw fired at the suspect, striking him in the arm.

Moments later, the Pilate was taken into custody, and then taken to a local hospital for treatment. Shaw suffered minor injuries, and was also hospitalized.

Both men are expected to fully recover.
