Germantown aldermen want to study own schools

GERMANTOWN, Tenn. (AP) - A majority of Germantown's aldermen say they want a consultant to look at the feasibility of the Memphis satellite city starting its own school system.

At least 3 of the five sitting aldermen favor looking into an independent public school system, according to The Commercial Appeal ( ).

Aldermen Mark Billingsley, Greg Marcom and Mike Palazzolo replied to the newspaper by telephone or e-mail on Tuesday, saying they wanted to look at the idea.

Alderman John Drinnon couldn't be reached for comment and Alderman Ernest Chism, who also is a member of the Shelby County school board, said he wants to see whether a federal judge would approve a municipal school system.

A federal court has ruled in support of consolidating the Memphis City Schools and the Shelby County school system.
