Website hacked in retaliation for cell phone shut-down

SAN FRANCISCO (KNTV/NBC) - Anonymous, an online activist group, is taking credit for hacking into, the website for California's Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system.

BART officials said they shut down the website after hackers stole data for hundreds of users and posted it to the internet.

Anonymous said its actions are in retaliation for BART shutting off cell phone service Thursday night in order to thwart a planned protest at Civic Center Station.

The protest was in response to the fatal shooting of Charles Hill last month by a BART police officer.

Anonymous, along with other organizations and some San Francisco city leaders, said BART's decision was dangerous and a violation of civil rights.

BART spokesperson Jim Allison said shutting down cell service will be a consideration Monday afternoon as well.
