Man killed in collision with Tunica County coroner

(WMC-TV) - Old Highway 304 in DeSoto County was shut down for much of Wednesday morning after the Tunica County coroner's van collided with a pick-up truck.

The driver of the truck, a 53-year-old man who has not been identified, died in the violent crash, which happened just outside Hernando, west of Fog Road.

William White, who lives nearby, heard about the wreck.  Unable to reach his son, he drove out to the crash seen.

"I was worried to death," he said.

But White's son was not involved.

Investigators said Tunica County's coroner, Glenn Grant, was taken to Baptist DeSoto hospital after the crash. Witnesses said he lost control of his van during heavy rain, over corrected, and was T-boned by an oncoming pick-up truck.

Local residents called the stretch of Highway 304 where the accident occurred extremely dangerous. Less than 100 yards from Wednesday's accident scene sat a cross, memorializing another deadly wreck.

"It's still very busy, and people drive very fast," Eudora resident Bobbie Pool said.

"I think they need to patrol this highway a little more," White added.

Grant is expected to recover from his injuries.
