(WMC-TV) - A convicted felon was recovering at The MED Wednesday after leading deputies on a chase Tuesday through Hickory Hill.

Marvin Slater, who said he knows 38-year-old Daetrus Pilate, was shocked by the recent charges against him.

"I never think he'd do anything like that though," Slater said.

Pilate was wanted for aggravated sexual battery and rape of a child when sheriff's deputies attempted to arrest him Tuesday.

"He has been on the books since 2005, and he's an individual that needs to be off the street," Shelby County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Chip Washington.

According to Washington, Pilate has a lengthy criminal background.

"Aggravated sexual battery, domestic assault, domestic violence criminal attempted rape, and domestic assault to commit bodily harm," Washington said.

We're also told Pilate failed to register as a sex offender.

"I thought he was just an older guy just watching us play hoops," Slater said. "I thought he was cool, straight. He never did anything wrong toward us or nothing like that."

Pilate is in trouble yet again after authorities say he injured Deputy Tobey Shaw's leg during a chase Tuesday through a Hickory Hill neighborhood. When Pilate tried to run over the deputy, Shaw shot him in the shoulder.

"Now it's in the hands of the legal folks," Washington said. "The District Attorney's Office will determine the charges against Mr. Pilate and then it'll go from there."

Pilate's lengthy criminal record doesn't stop here. Investigators say he has also been previously charged with speeding and driving with a suspended license.
