Memphis City Council members exchange angry e-mails

(WMC-TV) - A recent e-mail exchange between two Memphis City Council members grew heated following a council vote.

According to the e-mail obtained by The Memphis Flyer's Jackson Baker, council member Wanda Halbert wrote of a recent council action, "This was really SILLY and UNPROFESSIONAL!!!!!" in an e-mail to current council chairman Myron Lowery.

The council had voted to limit the time members can speak on one issue to just five minutes.  The vote took place after Halbert and several others left the lengthy meeting for other engagements.

"This council should really stop this!" Halbert added in her e-mail.  "Not only is it embarrassing, IT'S VERY UNPROFESSIONAL and shows we clearly are not a team (when we choose not to be)."

Lowery waited more than a week to respond, but wrote back to Halbert, "HOW DARE YOU !!"

"You are not well respected by your colleagues," Lowery said, referring to why no one else had responded to her e-mail.  "You are right, we can never be a team as long as your are illogical and emotional."

The Memphis Flyer reported that Halbert replied to Lowery's response, saying, in part, that women are too often categorized as emotional.

Halbert was unavailable for comment Wednesday.  Lowery said he stands by his words.
