Teen to be tried as adult for attack in East Memphis park

(WMC-TV) - A 15-year-old will be tried as an adult for two separate attacks at an East Memphis park within walking distance of his home.

On June 30, sheriff's deputies showed up at Casey Hayslett's home on Gavick Drive.

"A whole bunch of police activity, sheriff's cars," said neighbor David Lambert.

Lambert found out later his 15-year-old Hayslett was under arrest for allegedly attacking a woman along a walking trail in Lowrance Park.

"I was concerned because the park is where my son has played ever since we've lived here," said Lambert.

The victim managed to fight off her attacker with a knife, but investigators said a second victim was sexually assaulted along the same trail on June 6.

Prosecutors have linked Hayslett to that crime and will try him as an adult for aggravated assault and aggravated rape.

"When I heard about it, you know, I was happy that they had caught him," said neighbor Deloris Cooke.

Hayslett is a Southwind High School student.  Earlier this year, his father posted a video on Facebook of the teenager playing football on the school's junior varsity team.

No one answered at Hayslett's home Thursday.

Hayslett was booked at the Shelby County Jail Wednesday and posted a $75,000 bond the same day.

Investigators used DNA evidence to link him to the aggravated rape case.
