MT. PLEASANT, SC (CNN) - Republican presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann said she would not shut down Gitmo if elected president.
"We need to stand up for the interrogation of terrorists in places like Guantanamo Bay," the Minnesota representative said Friday in Mt. Pleasant, SC.
Bachmann said the Cuban prison camp is an essential offense in the war on terror.
"I will not shut down that facility, because need to be able to have the interrogation necessary so we can capture people like Osama bin Laden," she said.
The war on terror is "a very different war" than any fought before it, Bachmann said.
Bachmann's comments came as she wrapped up a three-day campaign swing through South Carolina.
President Barack Obama's plans to shut down the U.S. prison camp have thus far not panned out.
