PHOENIX (CNN) - Critics are accusing the White House of providing backdoor amnesty to tens of thousands of illegal immigrants.
At issue is a dramatic change in how the Obama administration will prioritize deportation proceedings.
The new policy will halt proceedings against illegal immigrants who are deemed to pose no threat to national security or public safety.
Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, a Republican, suggested to CNN's John King that the president is abusing his executive power and needs to be reminded that he is not above the law.
"Well, we're a country of laws. We believe in the rule of law, John," Brewer said Friday on John King USA. "And the bottom line is that they are illegal aliens entering our country, and we simply cannot sustain that kind of activity."
Brewer said she doesn't believe the American public supports the new policy, which she called "a back door to amnesty."
Obama administration officials, however, call the new policy a matter of prioritizing cases and allocating scarce resources more efficiently.
