Car sharing now available to Ole Miss students

(WMC-TV) - Students and faculty at Ole Miss have a new option when it comes to getting around Oxford and the surrounding region.

Representatives from Zipcar were on-hand Tuesday to introduce the University of Mississippi campus to a new car sharing program.

With an affordable annual fee, students, faculty, staff, and local community members can rent a vehicle from Zipcar for rates starting as low as eight dollars per hour.

"It includes your gas, it includes maintenance, and it includes insurance," said the Ole Miss Director of Sustainability, Jim Morrison. "There's no reason not to try the Zipcar for at least an hour.

Ole Miss will offer two vehicles to start, making them available available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Once a customer signs up through the company's website, he or she will receive a membership card.  That card, in turn, unlocks the vehicle.

"With most rental car places you've got to be 21 to just to rent a car," said Ole Miss student Justin Shumate. "If you're a freshman on campus from up north, it'll help."

Designed to be fast, convenient, affordable, and environmentally friendly, Zipcar is just one part of the new 'Rebel Go' program at Ole Miss, aimed at moving the university forward in transportation efficiency.

"We are thrilled to be offering a comprehensive transportation program that lowers the cost of transportation for our students, our faculty, and our staff," Morrison said.

Zipcar has already partnered with more than 200 universities across the United States, including Rhodes College in Memphis.
