Father killed, son injured in Brownsville double shooting

(WMC-TV) - The family of Cedric Person and his 16-year-old son Marquis say they're simply lost tonight as they try and figure out what happened to cause a double shooting.

"It's in the Lord's hands," Brenda Person said. "I was angry yesterday, and I prayed about i,t and now it's in the Lord's hands."

Thursday, Person was lost and overcome with grief. A gunman shot and killed her son, 36-year-old Cedric Person, and critically injured her 16-year old grandson Marquis Person Wednesday night.

The shooting happened at the corner of McLemore and Lark in north Brownsville.

"He was my son...a father, brother, he had sisters and they took my baby from me and it hurts," she said.

Brownsville police say the shooting could be gang related but they're still unclear of the exact motive.

Dana Pirtle's sister was one of the first to arrive on the scene.

"She said she was trying to revive him...said, 'He's not gonna make it. He's gone. He's gone," Pirtle said.

Police issued an arrest warrant for 19-year-old Lakendrick Deberry, who is wanted for first degree murder in the case.

Police say Wednesday's shooting wasn't random. Family members say Deberry was friends with Person and his son.

Person's mother says he may have taken the first round of bullets for his son.

"He jumped behind his son and shot him in the back and Cedric fell in the ditch and they shot Marquis," she said.

Brownsville police are still looking for Lakendrick Deberry. If you've seen him or know where he is, call Brownsville Crimestoppers at 731-772-CASH.
