Covington mother mourns as she buries second son in 12 years

(WMC-TV) - Teresa Smith says violent gun crime killed her son.  Friday, as she prepared to lay him to rest, she said something must be done.

"I try to understand what happened, and why someone would do that to my child," she said.

Saturday, Teresa will bury her second son in twelve years.

"Crime must stop," she said. "We need to come together and love. That's what God is about."

Chopper 5 was over the scene last Friday night shortly after Darius Heaston, 20 and a friend, Tedrick Dunn, were shot at Frazier Park. Police say there was a large crowd gathered at the park when gunfire came from across the street and into the crowd.

"I understand the guy that did it, one of the guys that did it, had come through the park, he spoke and they spoke," Smith asaid

According to District Attorney Mike Dunavant, the TBI is assisting in this investigation. Dunavant wouldn't confirm whether or not this was a gang shooting, but he did say crimes like this are on the rise in Covington, and something's got to be done about it.

Covington police arrested Tony Davis in the crime, charging him with second degree murder.

Heaston's mother says she wasn't aware her son was involved in gang activity.

"This is an act of the devil -- it's got to stop," she says.

Meanwhile, a makeshift memorial still sits on the park table where Darius Heaston lay, as his mother prepares to bury her son.

Heaston's funeral is set for 2:00PM Saturday in the Covington High School gym.
