7-year-old killed after shots fired into apartment

(WMC-TV) - A 7-year-old was shot and killed by a bullet fired into her home early Saturday morning.

Bullets fired into an apartment on Millbranch near Winchester hit and killed 7-year-old Miranda Thomas around 1:00 a.m. Saturday.

When police arrived, they found Thomas lying on the bedroom floor with what appeared to be a gunshot wound.  She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the suspects drove by the apartment and shot into it.

Neighbor Callie Collins said Thomas was friendly and smart.

"I almost collapsed when I heard it," said Collins.  "That's awful.  If it had been mine, I don't think I would have made it."

Neighbors said Thomas' mother had six other children and is pregnant right now.  Miranda Thomas was her only daughter.

The suspects apparently shot at the house because they were upset that her mother and another woman ignored their conversation attempts.

"Could have been in my house," said Collins.  "It's just next door, they could have come through my front window right there."

Collins said the mother had to be taken to the hospital for stress after the shooting.

"She's not doing well," she said.

More than an hour after the shooting, police found the suspects' car at a BP gas station on Shelby Drive.  Two men were taken into custody.

Police said charges have not been filed.
