(WMC-TV) - Deputies in Crittenden County have filed charges against a suspect in a 2004 double murder.

Monday, officials said Victor Williams has been charged with two counts of murder, burglary and arson in an almost 7-year old-murder case.

On December 4, 2004, 68-year-old Elisha Maxwell and 34-year-old Deanna Valarde were both found shot to death inside a home on Powell Street in Sunset, Arkansas.  After the shootings, the house was set on fire.

Michael Calendar, an investigator with the Crittenden County Sheriff's Office, said both Maxwell and Valarde had been shot in the head.

"Mr. Williams and Ms. Valarde had a domestic relationship previously," he said. "There had been some discord in that relationship that we think triggered this."

Investigators arrested Williams after tracking new leads in the case.

"Over the years it had become a known fact in the Sunshine area that he committed the murders, but at the time the investigation was made prosecutors didn't think they had enough to go forward with it," Calendar said.

Elisha Maxwell's son, Kevin, said the arrest was welcome news for a family still mourning.

"It's a beautiful thing that justice will finally be served in the case," he said.

Calendar said there are at least eight other cold cases that remain unsolved in Crittenden County.
