Woman caught shoplifting with 12-year-old niece

(WMC-TV) - A Memphis woman was caught in the act over the weekend trying to steal from a Memphis mall.  But who the woman brought with her was what had people talking Monday.

The arrest of Marisol Garcia, 26, caught some shoppers at Wolfchase Galleria by surprise.

"I'm very shocked," shopper Jennifer Chunn said Monday. "I'm just speechless."

Garcia and her 12-year-old niece are charged with theft after shoplifting over $1,300 worth of clothing from Macy's.

According to a police incident report, a security officer at the store recovered nearly 40 items of clothing. Investigators say the officer saw Garcia and the teen go into the dressing rooms where the pair tried to hide the clothes in Macy's bags they brought with them and in their purses.

Action News 5 was unable to reach Garcia for comment Monday.

According to police, Garcia also had a seven month old child and a four month old child with her.  She allegedly hid a bag of clothing under the child carrier and in the stroller, and left the store.

"I guess it's because of the economy and all, but we got to do something about it," said Brad Turner, who spent Monday shopping at the mall. "It's not good for the kids, definitely."

Garcia's bond was set at $2,000. Meanwhile, police issued a Juvenile Court summons for her 12-year-old niece, and released her to her mother.
