(WMC-TV) - A deputy jailer with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office has been arrested for theft.

Billy Brooks is accused of committing multiple thefts from the Walmart located at 8400 Highway 64.

Along with his job at the sheriff's office, Brooks works in the meat department at the store.

Brooks and a second suspect, Velda Gates, were arrested Wednesday, and charged with theft of property $1,000 to $10,000.

Investigators said Brooks was seen walking to other departments while he was on the clock and put several items in a shopping cart.  He then took the cart to the meat department, bagged the items and pushed the cart outside the store.

Investigators said Brooks took items, including laptop computer, a printer and TV stand, on six different occasions beginning August 2.

Brooks was spotted with a woman fitting Gates' description inside the store and outside loading the stolen items into a maroon Lexus.  He loaded another cart into a gold Cadillac.

Brooks has been relieved of duty while authorities investigate the alleged thefts.

No one answered at Brooks' home in Raleigh Thursday.

"He's lived there for years and years, and we always thought he was very nice," said neighbor Sue Baker.  "Very shocked."
