Horse-drawn carriages return to spot at Peabody

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Horse-drawn carriages have returned to their familiar space in front of Memphis' Peabody hotel after days of being told to stay away from the area.

Memphis police officers on Sunday began telling drivers of the carriages to move. Officers issued tickets for violations of a no-parking area, The Commercial Appeal reports (http://bit.ly/p8WXLx).

However, the situation appeared to have been resolved by late Thursday, with carriages once again lining up in front of the hotel.

Col. A.C. Knight says the carriages can stay as long as drivers follow certain rules and both lanes of eastbound Union Avenue aren't needed for traffic

The rules include no U-turns on heavily-traveled Union Ave., and the drivers have to park close to the sidewalk.

Carriage driver Jake Schorr says the hotel is a lucrative spot.
