Sgt. Benjamin's neighbors describe unhappy home life

Memphis, TN (WMC-TV) Sgt. Norman Benjamin was allegedly involved with three women while married to his wife, the mother of their two children. His former neighbors tell us that they didn't appear to be a happy family.

Neighbors say a Bartlett home on Elmhill Drive used to be where Sgt. Norman Benjamin's wife lived for about 10 years.

They aren't sure if Sgt. Benjamin actually lived there too, because they saw him so infrequently.

"He was a jerk," one neighbor who did not want to give his name said.

The neighbor says he often heard arguments coming from the home. His wife moved out of the house about a year ago.

Another neighbor says he never spoke with Sgt. Benjamin, but he used to see his wife out walking her dogs..

"I did speak to her, like good morning, and she would reply," Jim Shelton said.

Sgt. Benjamin told Memphis police he was shot by a Hispanic man Saturday afternoon. Investigators say his story didn't match the scene.

Police later arrested this woman in the shooting 54-year-old Martha Mote. Police say he had a romantic relationship with her and possibly her 17-year-old niece.

"It's just very demeaning for the rest of the force," Shelton, a retired Memphis Police Sergeant said. "Those on the force now. Those like me who are retired....I think our citizens deserve better."

Sergeant Benjamin is relieved of duty with pay pending the outcome of the investigation. He faces possible charges of false reporting and charges related to his alleged relationship with an under age girl.
