Sheriff's office using YouTube to help catch criminals

(WMC-TV) – Shelby County investigators have found a new way to search for suspects, and it's already in action.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office now uses YouTube to help catch the bad guys.

"We post our video on YouTube and then we post a link to it on our Facebook page," said Shelby County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Chip Washington.

Washington said the sheriff's office uses their YouTube channel as a community weapon to fight crime.

"A lot of folks are very invested in their community and the safety of their community, so any avenue or outlet that we can use to help them communicate with us has proven to be successful," said Washington.

Recently, the sheriff's department posted surveillance video on their YouTube channel of a convenience store robbery where thieves took $10,000.  The video received 100 views in less than 24 hours.

"It's a very good view of them on surveillance video, and as always, we ask folks who may know these individuals to give us a call," said Washington.

Washington said that although watching criminals misbehaving can sometimes be fascinating, they are most concerned with catching criminals.

"Our primary concern is not for the entertainment value, but for solving crime," said Washington.
