TDOT worker killed on I-240

(WMC-TV) - A TDOT worker was killed Thursday after he was hit by pickup truck near the intersection of I-40 and I-240.

Michael Dalton, 41, had worked for the Tennessee Department of Transportation since 2007.

"Our crews are out every day working in these dangerous conditions," said Nichole Lawrence with TDOT.

According to a police report, a 48-year-old man told officers he was driving his Ford F-150 pickup westbound on the I-40 ramp to go northbound on !-240 when Dalton stepped into traffic, causing the driver to hit Dalton.

TDOT said Dalton was wearing his safety vest and hard hat.  Emergency lights were also flashing to warn motorists.

"Mr. Dalton and his crew were setting up traffic controls to close the should down at Summer and I-40 so crews could perform some routine maintenance," said Lawrence.

Lawrence said she hopes the tragedy serves as a wake up call for drivers.

"We just can't stress enough to everybody to please just watch and be aware of your surroundings and the people out trying to make our roadways as safe as possible," said Lawrence.

The driver hasn't been cited for the accident. However, police say their investigation is ongoing.

Dalton is from Millington and has been with TDOT since 2007.  He was married and had children.
