Schnucks stores clearing out stock before merger with Kroger

(WMC-TV) - The deal between Kroger and Memphis Schnucks stores means big deals for Schnucks shoppers Friday and Saturday.

Some Schnucks stores close Saturday evening, and that means everything must go.

"Medications, school supplies, everything," said Schnucks shopper Sarah Weinstein.  "You can probably save a little bit of money on everything and a lot of money on some things."

Schnucks stores are slashing prices and offering deep discounts on over 95 percent of the store's merchandise.

"My receipt is normally half this long, and it's about $100," said shopper Claire Vandrimmelen.  "So far, twice the length of the receipt, it was $160, so that's a decent savings."

Company officials said store shelves must be emptied now that eight Schnucks stores are being converted and reopened as Kroger stores.

"They are picked clean," said Weinstein.  "It is slim pickings, and people are still just going through there and just rummaging through everything they can find a good bargain."

Some customers worry the deal could mean higher prices.

"I'm a little worried about the prices at Kroger, just because they won't have a big competitor," said Vandrimmelen.  "So I'm concerned the prices may go up over there."

Other shoppers are taking advantage of an opportunity to get more bang for their buck.

"If you're looking for something, you better run in there quickly, because it's going to be gone," said Weinstein.  "I was looking at something, I turned around, it was gone."
