Schnucks stores begin closing before transition to Kroger

(WMC-TV) - Eight Schnucks grocery stores in Memphis closed Saturday and will reopen as Kroger stores in two weeks.

Shoppers enjoyed sale prices up to 50 percent off as the Schnucks stores cleared their shelves.

Three additional Schnucks stores in East Memphis, Germantown and Collierville will close for good at the end of the month.

Loyal Schnucks shoppers said they are sad to see the company go and worry Kroger may take advantage of having few competitors.

"The prices are going to not be competitive," said shopper Sharon Griffin.  "Some things are cheaper at Schnucks than Kroger."

The St. Louis based grocery store chain came to Shelby County in 2002 when the company bought out Seessel's.

Kroger has said it plans to hire most of Schnucks employees.

Congressman Steve Cohen is asking for a federal investigation to determine if Kroger is violating antitrust laws by not having any comparable competitors in the area.  Kroger will now own 43 stores in the region.
