Memphis man, foster son drown in Coro Lake

(WMC-TV) - An investigation continued Monday into the drownings of two people Sunday night at Coro Lake.

Sunday night, Jimmy Austin, 61, and Travell Lark, 9, were on a fishing trip together when Lark fell into the lake.

According to investigators, Austin jumped in to save the boy, but it was too late, and they both drowned.

It took rescue crews about an hour to recover their bodies.

Monday, Austin's wife, Annette, said she and her husband moved from Los Angeles to Memphis about two years ago. They were serving as foster parents to Lark, who had a difficult upbringing.

Even though they had only taken in Lark a few weeks ago, the Austins had already started planning to adopt him outright.

Monday, nearby residents described Coro Lake as private, residential and patrolled. The water is 20 feet deep at most, but averages only eight feet in depth.

The Memphis Fire Department and Medical Examiner are conducting an investigation into the drownings as a precaution.
