Impersonating a cop puts Memphis man behind bars

(WMC-TV) - Police have busted a man who told them he was a cop.

Neighbors asked for help dealing with William Bruce after becoming upset with his behavior - and the condition of his property.

"When he uses the bathroom, he would toss it in that lady's yard next door," said Edith Reese, a neighbor.

Tuesday, police showed up at Bruce's home on Hawkins Mill Road to investigate the matter.

"He didn't want the city to cut the grass," neighbor Larry Humphrey said. "He told 'em to get the 'bleep' out of his yard."

Police arrested Bruce after, according to neighbors, he told them he was a police officer.  Investigators said Bruce had a black duffel bag which contained 14 fake Illinois driver's licenses, six phoney Tennessee driver's licenses, three bogus social security cards, and more then $2,300 in counterfeit cash.

According to an affidavit of complaint, Bruce refused to comply with officers. As part of a long list of charges, his is accused of criminal impersonation.

"He's weird," Humphrey said. "I don't know what he is. I don't want him policing me. I'll put it like that."

Wednesday, Bruce remained locked up at 201 Poplar on $20,000 bond. He's due back in court in one week.
