Millington mayor addresses resignation rumor

(WMC-TV) - Millington Mayor Richard Hodges is still running the city and still in charge of meetings like one called Wednesday night for the board of aldermen.

"Rumor has it that this meeting was called for me to announce my resignation," said Hodges during the meeting.

The meeting was actually called to address some fairly mundane matters, but it allowed the mayor an opportunity to try and put the resignation rumor to rest.

"My friends, this is simply not true," said Hodges.  "Don't believe every rumor you hear," he added.

Hodges remains at the center of a public corruption probe conducted by the Shelby County District Attorney's Office and the TBI.

His home and office at city hall were raided at the end of July.  A transmission shop where investigators say illegal gambling took place was raided as well.  Hodges allegedly used his position to settle debts with the shop's owner.

"Yeah, I've heard about it," said Millington resident Corey Alexander.

Alexander said she believes the mayor should stay put unless criminal charges are filed.

"Because it's the right thing to do if you know you ain't did nothing," said Alexander.

Others are convinced Hodges did do something wrong and should step down.

"I think for the betterment of the city," said one woman.

Hodges is holding out for now and offered advice for those spreading rumors.

"If you want to know an answer, you come talk to me," said Hodges.  "And I'll shoot you straight."

The DA's office has yet to present evidence from the Millington raids to a grand jury.
