Dr. Oz pushes for improvement of health care

(WMC-TV) - The state of health care in America is being closely examined by one the nation's leading health care professionals.

Dr. Oz was available in Memphis Thursday via satellite as he joined a national conversation about the growing movement to improve the quality of health care.

In alliance with the Memphis organization, The Healthy Memphis Common Table, Care About Your Care was an event that provided an open forum for the public to discuss their opinions on health care.

"We're trying to engage the patients or consumers to get more actively involved in their care and understanding what it is" said HMCT Program Manager Patricia Tosti.

Dr. Oz recently made headlines after he made claims that his show hired an independent lab that found some brands of apple juice to have potentially dangerous levels of arsenic.

Despite the current apple juice controversy, Thursday's Memphis audience took notes and listened attentively as Dr. Oz and his panel of health care leaders spoke about health empowerment.

Care About Your Care representatives said that 50 percent of residents in Shelby County don't receive the proper preventive care they need most.

With this alarming statistic, panelists urged health care consumers to look, learn, and live:

Look for the right care for you and your family. Learn what quality care is and what's being done to improve health care in America. And Live better by caring about your care.
