Four men honored in Oakland for saving couple from house fire

(WMC-TV) - Four men were honored in Oakland, Tennessee Thursday for rescuing a couple from their burning home earlier this summer.

It was dark on Village Drive on June 30 when Chris Fulton and his friend Colt Mitchell saw the flames roaring through the window.  They ran into their neighbor's house.

One kicked out the window while the other pulled Janis Davis through the flames.  She was still screaming for her husband trapped inside.  By then, two Oakland police officers were at the scene.

Through the heavy smoke, the officers pulled badly burned Maurice Davis to safety.  Months after the fire, all four men were in the same room being honored by the board of alderman Thursday.

Both officers were given Purple Heart awards for their courage.  One officer was given a lifesaver medal.

All four men said they are not heroes but were just in the right place to help.

Both fire victims are still recovering.  Maurice Davis is in the hospital being treated for burns, while his wife has been released.
