New Olive Branch skating rink ready for action

(WMC-TV) - It's what ice sporting fans have been waiting for years. Even though it is still under construction, skaters from across the Mid-South are thrilled about the grand opening of the new Mid-South Ice House.

"People are very excited," said Adam Turner, the arena's general manager. "Can't wait for this area. It's been a long time coming."

The 30,000 square foot facility is conveniently located in an industrial area in Olive Branch. There hasn't been a facility like it in the Mid-South since the Mall of Memphis closed in 2003.

"This is an NHL regulated or certified ice sheet," Turner said.

The Mid-South Ice House is part of a four year, multiple-million dollar project started by two local businessmen.

"Two hockey dads that have been involved with this for years in the making now who finally decided to pull the trigger to make it happen," Turner said.

The facility, which will be open year round, will offer everything from figure skating to ice hockey. You can also rent skates there, and take ice skating lessons.

Turner said the facility's location will be convenient for high school and college teams who want to use it for practice.

"Ole Miss and Memphis was our first college game here last weekend," Turner said. "We had about 550 spectators."

The Mid-South Ice House will hold its grand opening Saturday from 1:30pm to 8:30pm. For more information, click here:
