Officers called to home of former sergeant after release from hospital

(WMC-TV) - Shortly after former Memphis Police Sergeant Norman Benjamin was released from the hospital Wednesday, Bartlett Police were called to his house on South Pamela Ann Drive regarding a civil matter.

According to a memo on file with the police department, Benjamin's estranged wife told the responding officer he had returned to the house they own together "after a long absence" and that "she simply did not want him at the family home."

According to his wife, Benjamin filed for divorce in May of 2011, but falsified the documents, so the divorce was never finalized.  She advised that her attorney was currently filing a restraining order on her behalf regarding Benjamin.

There is not a restraining order on file at 201 Poplar at this point.  Both Benjamin and his wife told the Bartlett officer they had not been fighting or arguing.  Benjamin said he had just been released from the hospital and simply went home.

On September 3, Benjamin was shot while at work.  He told investigators a Hispanic man shot him during a struggle.

Police later said Benjamin lied and they are still investigating the exact nature of the shooting.

Bartlett Police are not investigating, but because of the circumstances and ongoing case, the address was flagged to send more than one officer on future calls.
