SANTA CLARITA, CA (KNBC/NBC) - A decade ago Susan Handley was a struggling single parent who was looking for a way to support her son.
She made the decision to pursue a passion she's had since she was a child.
"I have been designing bags since I was a little girl out of my mom's closet," Handley said.
Handley created Beijo Bags, a direct sales handbag company that she started from the trunk of her car.
In just nine years, it has become a multi-million-dollar company housed in a 28,000-square-foot warehouse in Santa Clarita, CA.
Handley said independent consultants who run handbag parties are the backbone of the company's success.
"When we go to a party, we put the bags out for the ladies and there is an amazing response with the bags," said Beth Spooner, a regional fashion director for Beijo.
Handley's mission is to help others find financial freedom.
"We have spent the last nine years providing an opportunity for women to be entrepreneurs and work for themselves and still balance their lives," Handley said.
So far, Beijo has sold more than 1.5 million handbags and accessories at parties and online.
