Anonymous hero saves disabled man from blaze

LEHIGH ACRES, FL (WBBH/NBC) - A Florida community is calling one of its neighbors a hero after he saved an elderly, disabled man from his burning home and then promptly vanished.

"I didn't wake up, at least as far as I know I didn't," said Jim Morton, 66. "This guy dragged me out."

The man who saved Morton ran from the backyard into the burning home and dragged the disabled man outside.

"I've had 13 back surgeries. There's no way I could've made it out myself if it hadn't been for that guy," said Morton.

A neighbor, Aida Vazquez, also saw the rescuer, who came to her door to warn her of the fire because he was afraid the blaze would spread to her home.

"He really saved us, too, because if that would have been much bigger, it could've easily caught our house on fire," said Vazquez.

Vazquez could not identify the hero but knows that he lives in a nearby home.

The fire destroyed most of Morton's possessions.

"I owe my life to this guy," said Morton. "I said, 'What do you do? You just don't go up and shake a guy's hand for something like that.'"

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
