(WMC-TV) - The effort to extinguish a blaze in one of the many buildings at an abandoned apartment complex on McCorkle Road in Whitehaven was far from over even hours after the fire first began Tuesday afternoon.

The blaze ignited concerns among many neighbors.

"They were a nuisance when they were functioning," said neighbor Larry Holt of the apartments.  "And they're a nuisance now."

Holt recalled at least three fires at the complex in recent years and was worried the next one one would spread.

"And perhaps even damage some of the homes that are along the line," said Holt.

In addition to being a potential fire hazard, the complex is filled with tires, debris, and garbage that has been illegally dumped.

Neighbors hoped heavy equipment brought in to demolish the burned out building would soon return.

"Condemn them, tear them down, they need to be torn down," said neighbor Stephanie Jones.  "Cause it's a hot mess."

Jones said the apartments are a safety hazard.

"There's too many kids around here for that, too many kids," said Jones.  "They have to walk from there to go to school."

A cursory search could not provide details about who owns the old apartments or the land on which they stand.

Action News 5 tried to get a response via Twitter from a number of city leaders but we never heard back.

The latest fire remains under investigation. Arson has not been ruled out.
