(WMC-TV) - One person was killed late Wednesday morning in a fire at a duplex in the 300 block of Williford in Binghampton.

Douglas Coburn, 50, was killed when the fire quickly spread through his duplex around 11:30 a.m.

According to investigators, the fire started on a couch after what they called careless use of smoking materials.

Cohen's brother, Tony Brooks, who stopped by to look at the damage, said Cohen was a heavy smoker.

"This is just heartbreaking you know?  Ain't too much to say...that's your family," he said.

Brooks said Cohen was disabled, and had lived in the duplex for several years.  He left behind five children, the youngest of whom is 17-years-old.

Investigators said the fire did not spread to the other side of duplex.  The person who lives there did not even notice the fire until another neighbor alerted him.
