Business owners frustrated with Ripley renovations

(WMC-TV) - Business leaders in Ripley say they have the best looking court square in the state, but some business owners say the street leading up to the square is a major problem.

Washington Street is one of the main thoroughfares to Ripley's court square. Business owners along the crowded street say construction going on there is a major headache.

"But the street itself, it should never be a flower garden in the middle of it," said J. C. White.

Charles Griggs and J. C. White have owned businesses in Ripley for years. They say the recent revitalization of the court square is nice and will certainly bring more tourists to the area.

Their problem is with the renovations that continue down Washington street in front of their businesses.

"If we have a fire or ambulance, there's no place to go," Griggs said..

"It's gonna be a big headache...gonna be the worst one we've ever had," White added.

Plans include trees and new lighting along Washington Street. Landscaped areas will also be placed in the middle of the already busy street.

White and Griggs say this will do nothing but create more traffic troubles. They're also both afraid businesses leading up to the square will suffer.

"Getting in and out will be a real mess," White said.

Downtown development leaders say this project has been given the go-ahead by the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

They say changes to Washington street have also been approved by city and state leaders.
