Bake sale based on race, gender causes controversy

(WMC-TV) - A controversial bake sale planned at the University of California-Berkeley has Campus Republicans in hot water.

The sale features a sliding scale where the price of the cookie or brownie depends on your gender and color of your skin.

For example, white men would pay the most and Native Americans men would be charged the least.  All women would get a discount.

Organizers said it is in response to pending legislation that would let California universities consider race or national origin during the administration process.

Campus Republican President Shawn Lewis said they never expected the fierce backlash they have received.

"We didn't expect personal threats to be made," said Lewis.  "They were implicit and explicit threats made to the organizers of the event, from burning down the table to throwing our baked goods at us and other kinds of physical threats."

Lewis said Campus Republicans will go ahead with their bake sale on Tuesday and are committed to their controversial pricing structure.
