15 dogs found at Memphis home without food or water

(WMC-TV) - Memphis police say they discovered 15 dogs last week without food or water at a duplex in the 2300 block of Warren.  13 of the dogs were inside.

30-year-old Montrella Hassell was charged with multiple counts of cruelty.

"It's just sickening," said pet owner Molly Fleming.

Fleming hates to hear allegations of animal abuse.

"When I hear stories like that, it's hard to even imagine how someone could make that choice," said Fleming.

Police officers discovered the dogs at the duplex while responding to a disturbance call next door.

They say most of the dogs were very thin with their rib cages and backbones showing.

Police say one of the dogs had recently delivered seven puppies.  They were transported to Memphis Animal Services with the other dogs.

Meanwhile, Hassell told officers he was just about to feed and water the animals before they arrived on the scene and denied any wrongdoing before he was taken to jail.

At last check, Hassell was being held on a $5,000 bond.
