Cheerleader shows spirit despite disability

PORTLAND, MI (WILX/NBC) - Being born with a disability hasn't kept a Michigan cheerleader from showing her school spirit.

"I love to get the crowd going and just be excited and show the world what I can do," said Julia Sulivan, who was born without limbs.

Julia tried out three times for her high school's cheerleading team, but did not make it.

That's when Portland High School's cheer coach decided to step in.

"I was surfing the internet and came on Julia's story, and I was very inspired. I brought it to the team and they challenged me to do something," said Coach Linda Fox.

The team invited Julia and her parents to the homecoming game and offered Julia a spot on the cheer team.

For Julia's parents, Mike and Carolyn Sullivan, it was an emotional day.

"Her cheering may not be quite the same as other people but she can still do it. She can strap on the pom poms, her spirit is there," said Mike Sullivan.

As for Julia, she's determined to succeed.

She will be trying out for her high school's cheerleading team again next year.

"I hope I can raise spirits and inspire people and I'm so glad everyone invited me because I just love being a part of the team," Julia said.
