Councilwoman Fullilove left off Mayor Wharton's list of choice candidates

(WMC-TV) - As supporters campaigned for incumbent Memphis City Councilwoman Janis Fullilove Wednesday, she now has to overcome being left off Memphis Mayor A C Wharton's list of choice candidates.

"I couldn't understand why the mayor would interfere in other races," said Fullilove.  "This is the first time in the history, except for boss Crump, that a mayor has tried to handpick a city council."

Fullilove said she was left off the mayor's list because she has butted heads with him on too many issues.

"With the pay cut relieving many city employees, eliminating death benefits for retirees," said Fullilove.  "Those are the kinds of things that we really butted heads over with."

Fullilove said her public problems with the law, alcohol and prescription drugs did not play a role in the mayor's decision.

"I don't think that played any role in it," she said.

For Fullilove, the job is now convincing voters to look past the slight.

"I ask the tough questions on the council, and I don't think the mayor likes that," said Fullilove.

Fullilove said she thinks her constituents like that about her and will say so at the polls.

This is the first year Mayor Wharton has released a list like this.  His campaign manager said the goal is to get a city council that can work well with the mayor for the next four years.

Election day is Thursday, October 6.
