(WMC-TV) - Continued growth in Olive Branch has created the need for expansion of some city services.
As one of Mississippi's fasted growing cities, Mayor Sam Rikard said Olive Branch's fire department has long needed to expand.
But Instead of spending over a million dollars to build a new facility, the city will absorb two Summershill volunteer stations. The stations, and all of their equipment, are being given to the city.
Both facilities are located on Pleasant Hill Road in Olive Branch, one is in the Northern part of the city near Goodman Road, and the other in the southern part near College Road.
"We're not going to add to our force at this point in time," Rikard said. "We'll be moving people from other stations to occupy one of those stations. They'll have firefighters there 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It'll cost some overtime dollars to do that. We'll monitor that to determine if it's the best way to handle it long-term with overtime."
Rikard says the expansion will also create an increase in fire protection for some residents who live in the county.
City leaders expect the transition to be completed by the end of 2011.
