(WMC-TV) - Imagine having your own personal ATM machine where you could withdraw thousands of dollars at a time, ultimately totaling more than a million dollars.
If the allegations are true, that's what a bookkeeper in the Shelby County Chancery Court Clerk's office had as authorities suspect him of embezzling nearly $1.1 million. Investigators think Brandon Gunn managed to get that last $90,000 out of the office after he had already been accused of wrongdoing.
So you may be thinking that's amazing, a bookkeeper would have to be a financial genius to be able to embezzle a huge amount of money like that. Well, not really. For six years in a row, auditors notified the Chancery Court Clerk's Office that there were pervasive problems with the Court's internal financial controls.Among other things, they found staffers in the clerk's office had check signing authority without any established dollar limits.
Yet another stain for a Shelby County institution that has "court" in its name. That's justice for you.
