(WMC-TV) - A theft charge filed against former Memphis City Council member and former interim Shelby County Mayor Joe Ford has been dropped.

Ford was accused of purchasing two Rolex watches from Las Savell Jewelers last Christmas Eve with a check that eventually bounced.

The jeweler tried for months to collect over $5,000 that was owed for the watches, eventually enlisting the aid of the Memphis Police Department.

The theft charge was filed against Ford earlier this week, after which he paid for the watches.

Defense Attorney Art Horne said Las Savell and Ford did business often, and the two made a 'gentleman's agreement' when Ford purchased the watches - an agreement that was complicated by Savell's recent death.

"(Ford) didn't have a relationship with (Savell's) daughter or the wife," said Ford's attorney, Art Horne. "The relationship was with Mr. Savell. So there were certain things they had agreed upon that I don't think they really knew about."

According to Horne, Ford had given Savell an expensive ring as collateral on the watches. As part of the deal to drop the charges, Ford paid the bill in full, and got his ring back."

Friday in court, after he agreed to pay court costs, the charge against Ford was dropped.
