(CNN) - General Motors will add a new airbag to some of its crossover SUVs next year.
The safety device will pop up between the vehicles' front seats.
GM officials say it could help prevent 29 percent of fatalities in side-impact crashes.
The automaker says the airbag will also put a stop to many of the head and spinal injuries that happen in those types of accidents.
The new front-and-center airbag will first be installed in the GMC Acadia, Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse.
