(WMC-TV) - A home invasion suspect was shot to death early Sunday morning in the 3300 block of William Tell in Memphis.

According to police, two men broke into the home around 1:00 a.m. Sunday. During the robbery, one of the suspects was shot in the chest. The homeowner was also shot, suffering an injury to his leg.

"I heard six shots and then I heard two or three more," said neighbor Jeri Severson.  "But I couldn't tell where it was coming from."

The wounded 24-year-old suspect was taken to The MED, where he later died.

Inside the house, police found the home's resident with a gunshot wound to his leg.  The 31-year-old was taken to The MED in non-critical condition.

The victim's girlfriend said her boyfriend managed to wrestle the suspect's gun away in time to shoot him.

Severson said she stayed lying down on her couch to avoid being hit by stray bullets.

"I was thinking it was gunshots, but I've never heard gunshots close, so I didn't know," said Severson.

Meanwhile, Memphis police are still searching for the second suspect.  He is described as a black male in his early to mid-twenties. He was last seen wearing black pants and a black hoodie.

Neighbor Vernatria Turnage said she hopes police catch the second suspect soon.

"That's so bold and brazen to break into someone's home when you know they're home," said Turnage.  "It's very scary, eye-opening as well, because I am right next door with my children."

The victim's girlfriend said the homeowner is expected to fully recover.
