(WMC-TV) - A McDonald's manager in Memphis is accused of stealing thousands of dollars from a fast food restaurant.
He's not the Hamburglar, but police say Marcus Carruthers recently tried to steal $7,000 from one of his restaurant's bank deposits.
According to court records, Carruthers said someone in a green Ford Mustang shot at him while he was taking the deposit to the bank. During the encounter Carruthers claimed, he ended up forfeiting all of the money.
But upon further questioning, Carruthers admitted to making the whole thing up. Instead, he told police, he stole the money and gambled it all away.
In July, a Chinese Inn restaurant manager was accused of the same crime. Siu Mak pleaded guilty to a lesser charge, and was sentenced to two days time served. But Carruthers is also charged with filing a false police report.
Tuesday, family members stood behind Carruthers, and argued he is not in financial trouble.
"He's a good young man," said his cousin, Harold Williams. "He's real good. He takes care of everybody."
Carruthers' bond is set at $10,000. Family members said late Tuesday they're trying to post it.
Carruthers does not have a criminal record.
