Tunica, MS bans saggy pants that hang too low

(WMC-TV) - Wearing saggy pants too low will soon be against the law in Tunica, Mississippi.

"It looks a lot better and it's more presentable," said resident Margaret Brigham.

Brigham is a grandmother who outlawed saggy pants at her house long ago.

"They pull them up at the door," said Brigham.

She is happy town leaders recently addressed saggy pants by redefining public nudity.

Basically, a previous ban on bare breasts or genitals now includes the wearing of pants below the hips where skin or undergarments are exposed.

"Everybody thought it was a great idea," said Mayor Chuck Cariker.

Cariker said the board of aldermen unanimously approved the measure after receiving a petition signed by a majority of local merchants.

"And it gives police officers the opportunity to go ask citizens to pull their pants up," said Cariker.

Police will have the power to write citations.  However, the mayor hopes they simply pass along a message.

"It's an opportunity for young folks to realize that's their appearance and a different one will help with jobs, interviews, and steps further in life," said Cariker.

"That's a good thing," said Margaret Brigham.

The ban on saggy pants in Tunica officially takes affect later this month.
